Mua sắm Giáng sinh (X-mas shopping)

Năm hết, Tết đến, một mùa mua sắm bận bịu lại đến. Chúng ta cùng đi mua sắm nhé! (off to the mall!). Bạn không hẳn là một người nghiện shopping phải không? (shopaholics) nhưng khi đi mua sắm, bạn cùng nên nghía qua một vài từ tiếng Anh của việc mua sắm.

"Shop 'til you drop" là cách chỉ việc đi mua sắm mệt nghỉ mới thôi. Cùng nghĩa với chữ này là power shopping. Mặc dù từ “mall” được dùng để chỉ bất kỳ khu vực dành cho khách bộ hành nào (any large pedestrian area) nhưng ngày nay nó được dùng để chỉ những khu bán hàng, siêu thị lớn. Vì dịp Giáng Sinh là lúc mọi người mua sắm nên thời điểm này được gọi là “the Christmas (or holiday) shopping season”, một cách dùng tương đương với “hunting season”, để chỉ đến mùa được phép săn bắn. Những ngày mua sắm trước dịp này thường được tính theo kiểu đếm ngược (the amount of time available before Christmas for shopping is often counted down), ví dụ: “Ten shopping days until Christmas” (chỉ còn 10 ngày mua sắm trước lễ Giáng sinh). Người nghiện mua sắm được gọi là “shopaholic”, (nếu so với tay nghiện rượu, “alcoholic”), người nghiện làm việc “workaholic”). Nhưng người ta thường dùng chữ này như một cách đùa cho vui.
Thẻ tín dụng “credit card” thường được dùng là “card”, bỏ đi chữ “credit” hoặc là “plastic”. “Put it on my card” nghĩa là tính vào thẻ tín dụng cho tôi (charge it to my credit card). Nếu thẻ tín dụng của bạn bị “maxed out” tức là bạn đã chi bằng hoặc vượt số tiền trong thẻ (if your plastic is maxed out, that means you are at or beyond the credit limit on your card). “Tragically hip and fabulous” là cách dùng hài hước để nói đến những gì… rất ư là thời thượng. Còn “Talking trash” nói chung có nghĩa tán dóc (talking in a frivolous way, such as gossiping).
Trong tiếng Anh, từ “clerk” rất hay được dùng để chỉ những nhân viên văn phòng chăm chỉ nhưng… lương không bao nhiêu (the word can refer to hard-working, but poorly-paid office workers), hoặc là những người phục vụ tại những dịch vụ công cộng (public-service points) như quầy tiếp tân, ngân hàng, thư viện.
“X-mas” là nhữ viết tắt của chữ “Christmas”. Nếu bạn đi mua hàng mà vì một lý do nào đó bạn không thích món hàng đó nữa (có thể là vì nó hỏng), bạn đem trả lại cửa hàng. Số tiền bạn nhận được gọi là “refund”. Nếu bạn đổi lại món khác, bạn “take order merchandise in instead of cash”, hoặc là “you have made an exchange” hoặc “exchanged your gift”. Khi mua hàng mà nhà sẳn xuất tặng bạn “một món tiền”, đó là nhà sản xuất tặng bạn “rebate”: (một dạng khuyến khích mua hàng bằng cách tặng một số tiền). Từ “cheap” thường được dùng để nói đến hàng rẻ (inexpensive). Ví dụ: “I know a place where we can get a good, cheap meal” (Mình biết chỗ bán đồ ăn vừa ngon lại rẻ) hoặc là hàng kém chất lượng như “These cheap digital watches are always fall in apart!” (Mấy cái đồng hồ mã này chẳng mấy chốc mà hư). Kẻ bần tiện cũng được gọi là “cheap” hoặc “cheapskate”. Shoddy goods là hàng thứ phẩm, kém chất lượng (products of low quality).
