The G20 have come up with a package of plans that add up to well over a trillion dollars to tackle the recession.

One key component is an agreement to treble to seven hundred and fifty billion dollars the resources available to the International Monetary Fund for lending to countries in trouble. They also want a tenfold increase in what are called special drawing rights which is rather like an IMF currency and which strengthen the foreign exchange reserves of its member countries.

The G20 also plans closer regulation of financial firms with curbs on executive pay and new oversight of large hedge funds.

The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, described the summit as marking a new consensus on tackling global problems.

Lights... cameras... philosophy... An unlikely subject for a blockbuster with an unlikely leading man. Chow Yun-Fat, the star of numerous Hong Kong gangster movies, is to swap his sub-machine gun for the scholarly robes of Confucius. The film could also seem unlikely given how the ancient thinker fell out of favour in China. Chairman Mao Zedong said he belonged to the feudal age, and the Red Guards of the Cultural Revolution destroyed his grave.

But that was in the 1960s and 70s. Now China's leaders are turning to Confucius to give the country some spiritual guidance. His emphasis on harmony and self-discipline, without reference to God of course, has been endorsed by the president. Confucian texts have been given greater prominence in universities and the government is now partly funding the 20-million-dollar film.

So what wisdom can we expect up on the silver screen? Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without? Or perhaps one suited to Chow Yun-Fat's earlier movies: before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.

Cứu trợ động đất tiếp tục

Việc tìm kiếm những người sống sót trong vụ động đất hôm thứ Hai tại thành phố L'Aquila, miền trung Italy, vẫn tiếp tục. Con số người thiệt mạng nay tăng lên hơn 250 người.

The first funeral is being held in Italy following Monday's earthquake. It is due to take place outside the region. The authorities say they're looking for alternative locations in L'Aquila to hold funerals as all the churches here are believed to be too dangerous.

The rescue operation is continuing for a third day. It is believed that around fifteen people are still missing. Many of the homeless spent another chilly night outside. Twenty tented cities have now been set up in and around L'Aquila.

Aftershocks are still being felt causing fear amongst the residents sleeping outdoors. Since the earthquake there have been more than four hundred tremors.

The piracy problem looks like it's here to stay despite the recent muscular interventions by the French and American navies. Whether this latest attempted hijacking was the promised revenge for the killing of three Somali pirates by the US navy isn't clear. But it does suggest at the very least that the pirates haven't been deterred.

So why does the problem persist? Put simply maritime security analysts say piracy will continue as long as the financial rewards for a successful hijacking remain so great and Somalia remains so lawless. Certainly the international effort to thwart the problem is relatively limited. At any one time there are only fifteen to eighteen international warships in the area to police an expanse of sea covering more than a million square kilometres. Although it has been suggested that raids could be mounted on the pirates' home towns, it seems unlikely there'll be any major increase in the military effort unless there's a spectacular hijacking involving the deaths of many crew members.

The reluctance to mount a major international naval operation in the area may also be down to the relatively small scale of the problem. Last year, according to figures from the International Maritime Bureau, nearly twenty three thousand ships passed through the Gulf of Aden. Only ninety two were hijacked.

The ANC is being challenged by a new breakaway party, the Congress of the People, and by the long-standing official opposition, the Democratic Alliance. They both accuse the ANC of corruption and cronyism.

The ANC leader, Jacob Zuma, who's had corruption charges against him dropped, looks confident and secure. He's now just one step away from becoming President. After the shouts of rage from Congress, this was a vote that reflected the public anger over the AIG bonuses. Eighty-five House Republicans joined with Democrats to approve a 90% tax on bonuses awarded to high-earning employees from bailed out companies.

This was despite opposition from Republican leaders, who argued that the measure was intended to divert attention away from questions about the administration's handling of the affair.

The tax, which the Senate will now consider, would apply to anyone earning more than $250,000 and firms receiving over $5bn of public money.

Scientists predict Peru will be one of the three countries most impacted by climate change. The problems are largely geographic and demographic. Two thirds of the population live in the main cities on the desert coast with a tiny proportion of the nation's rainfall. They rely heavily on the fact that Peru is also home to seventy percent of the world's tropical glaciers.

Peru is also home to the second largest swathe of Amazon rainforest which is under enormous pressure from de-forestation and oil and gas exploration. Scientists say it's crucial to preserve it not only for Peru's water supply but for the global climate system. Researchers say half of Peru's main rivers are polluted, mostly by mining operations in the Andes Mountains. Add to this the ever more frequent El Nino phenomenon which alternately causes drought and flooding.

Peru is already split between the haves and the have nots when it comes to access to water and conflicts are escalating. In Lima many people in poor neighbourhoods pay up to ten times more for water than people living in middle class suburbs.

These have been the worst riots in years and, although it was quiet overnight, the protests show no sign of abating.

If the demonstrations were spontaneous outpourings of anger to start with, they are now showing signs of being politically agitated by opposition parties keen to pile pressure on a very vulnerable government. The Greek communist party has called a mass rally in central Athens for later today, as has another party called the coalition of the left. The main socialist opposition party has urged Greeks to denounce the government, although the party's youth wing called for peaceful protests.

Most of the clashes have happened in university cities across Greece and have involved students. They have now been given the go-ahead to carry on by their tutors because the university professors have announced that they will stage a three day walkout from today.

Greece's interior minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos has said that he understands people's anger, but he has condemned the violence for undermining social peace and targeting the property of innocent people.

The victim of the police shooting has been named as 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. One police officer has been charged with murder and another with being an accomplice.

China has ambitious plans to develop civil aircraft manufacturing. Eventually the aim is to challenge Boeing and Airbus, the dominant Western plane makers. The first step is a small regional jet - the ARJ-21, also known as the Flying Phoenix - designed to take 90 passengers on short and medium length journeys.

It's the first Chinese designed and manufactured commercial jet. And in a little piece of history it's now made its maiden test flight from an airport near Shanghai. Chinese media reports said the flight went extremely well, although for safety reasons the aircraft wasn't allowed to fly more than 900 meters, about 3,000 feet, above the ground.

It's due to go into service within 18 months. The main market will be Chinese airlines operating routes within China, but earlier this month the plane got its first foreign order. The American industrial giant General Electric is buying five of the jets for its aircraft leasing arm, with an option to buy 20 more later.

Friday's test flight took place more than six months later than originally planned after reports of problems with components provided by outside suppliers.

Lụt lội tại Venice [Tiếng Anh Thời Sự]

In the past few hours the famous Piazza San Marco, or Saint Mark's Square, has already gone under around eighty centimetres of water. Surrounding streets have also been affected with some residents cut off in their homes.

But the Venice Tidal Centre says that levels could go much higher. It says the sea is due to rise to one meter sixty above its normal level - the highest since 1979.

Venice is built on hundreds of islands and often experiences high water at this time of the year. The worst incident was in 1966 when the city was submerged by nearly two meters of water amid catastrophic flooding throughout Italy.

Nam Phi chậm chuẩn bị cho World Cup

It's unusual for FIFA to make such a strong statement. Football's world governing body has been fully behind South Africa's preparations.

But it now seems inevitable that some projects will not meet their deadlines. Most of the concerns surround South Africa's commitment to overhaul its transport system and improve security. Jerome Valcke, who is the second in command to the president Sepp Blatter at FIFA, said there's simply no time for further delays.

The local organisers remain convinced that they will deliver on their promises and, despite the warning from FIFA, the possibility of moving the tournament to another country is not an option.
